August 28, 2018 - Block Island |
From Montauk, I maintained my same east-northeast heading, went feet wet, and continued across 16 nautical miles of ocean to Block Island. And there it is!
My first ever look at Block Island.
The airport is in the upper left center. At upper center is the Great Salt Pond, filled with boats. Clearly, that's where the action is.
Some nice houses on the south cliffs, overlooking the ocean.
I circled the island counter-clockwise. I had my iPad hooked up to the Scout, and was receiving air traffic information via ADS-B in. It was working pretty well.
The Great Salt Pond off to the west.
The Old Harbor, where the ferry boats pull in.
This was a sight I would see often for the rest of the day: hundreds of boats anchored in harbors, bays and ponds.
I landed uneventfully at Block Island airport. They had a guy directing airplane parking. Bethany's Airport dinner, the on-field restaurant, was jammed. It was only 11:00AM or so, and I was planning on eating at Martha's Vineyard so I passed on Bethany's. I'm guessing it is pretty good though, given all the people.
New England Airlines turbo-prop twins like this one fly between Westerly, Rhode Island and Block Island hourly in the summer. It's a 15 nautical mile flight. $109 round trip/$59 one-way.
A prime parking spot. Block Island does have a landing fee, but the airport manager only charged me $5 since I only stayed a few minutes. I asked him how busy things got and he said, "it's not bad now but later this afternoon it will be like the Battle of Britain overhead!"
